This week I am transplanting 2 non-dormant roses to a new position and ordering 4 new roses. The best time for transplanting roses is when they are dormant but this is not always possible, so it is important to make the move as stress free as possible for the rose bush. Logistics is the key and having everything ready and all tools and products to be used at hand at the time of transplant is the difference between a successful transplant and an unsuccessful one. Over the last 2 months I have been digging up all the Mediterranean Evergreen Myrtle in this border (a shrub that was far too large for this area and was invading both the lawn on one side and the driveway on the other side) so I was now ready to move the 2 existing roses into their new positions and give you a heads-up on the new roses I will be receiving in mid-autumn: Leonardo Da Vinci, Boscobel, Dolce Vita and Pat Austin. In total I will be having 6 rose bushes + the rose fountain + the Crape Myrtle in this border and I will be underplanting with plants. In September I will be planting spring bulbs in the form of miniature daffs and miniature species tulips both of which naturalize and will get better as the years go by. I need to shift the smaller plants around also (Columbine and Violas) but that can be done in 2 minutes. I can now see the structure of this new rose border and looking forward to receiving my new order.
