Description:
When you look at it in retrospect, spending a lot of money of any toy can be seen as a waste, since the attention span of most kids only lasts for a few days. After that, the toy is shoved into a toy chest, never to be seen again until it’s time to move or the kid grows up. The fate of your childhood toys might vary from collecting dust in the attic, to the most recent delivery to the thrift store. What you may not realize is that you might be giving away a small fortune, or letting a stack of cash collect dust in your house. Some of the most popular toys that you played with as a child may very well help you out financially. Here are some of the most valuable toys that were worth next to nothing at the time of their release.
Metal lunchboxes aren’t necessarily a toy, but they certainly showed off awesome logos, brands, and our favorite comics and television heroes while we munched on our Wonder Bread sandwiches. Typically, the lunchboxes were made out of metal for durability, regardless of any health or temperature concerns. A Dudley Do Right Metal Lunch Box was sold for $1,574
Interestingly enough, some toy failures may end up becoming some of the most treasured and sought after items. The Volkswagen Beach Bomb came out in 1969 and was pretty much a flop. Compared to the other items in the toy car market, the Beach Bomb couldn’t compete since it didn’t play well on metal tracks. So it was pulled, which makes the toy pretty rare. Toy collectors scramble the internet and conventions year round to try to find this toy, regardless of the condition. Recently, one of the Beach Bombs sold for $125,000.
One of the most expensive children’s item is not technically a toy, but instead, a book. When Maurice Sendak first published, “Where the Wild Things Are” in 1963, he had no idea that one day a first edition would sell for $18,000.
