"I welcome the decision of the European Union Commission to recommend the European Union to give the candidate status to Moldova and Ukraine. They really deserve it. Ukraine now defends not only their own borders, but European values. We also ask the European Union Council to mention Belarus in its final conclusions that after democratic changes, Belarus also can count on European perspective."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, leader of Belarus opposition:
"So first of all, Belarus has always belonged to a European family or states. But as for candidacy we have to ask Belarusian people, first of all, nobody's ever asked the people where they want our country to move. We have a dictator who told us that we are close with Russia and that's it. It's up to Belarusian people and after democratic changes, this question could arise among Belarusians, it's not the question for now."

STORYLINE:
The Belarus opposition leader has welcomed the European Commission's announcement to grant EU candidacy status to Moldova and Ukraine.
Speaking at a press conference in Lisbon, Portugal, after meeting the Portuguese foreign minister, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya said she hopes that one day Belarusian people will have the freedom to decide if they want the same future for their nation.
Earlier on Friday morning the European Union's executive arm had recommended making Ukraine a candidate for EU membership.
The move would be a first step on what is expected to be a long road before the war-torn country could actually join the 27-nation bloc. The European Commission on Friday delivered its proposal to award Ukraine candidate status after a fast-tracked analysis of answers to a questionnaire.
The Ukrainian government applied for EU membership days after Russia invaded the country on February 24.
The leaders of the bloc's member states are scheduled to discuss the recommendation during a summit next week in Brussels.
