There are more than 60 species of bats in the Monteverde area. Some species like the Hummingbird bat for instance, drink nectar to survive, while other types like vampires, drink blood from cows. They also help control insects. Some of them would eat 3000 insects per day.
They are threatened with extinction because of big wind turbines, various diseases and because people in different parts of the world consider them to be a delicacy.
