When summing or doubling points on an elliptic curve in simple Weierstrass form, sometimes, the straight line used to find the negative of the result does not cross such curve elsewhere. Then we say the result is the point at infinity and you can see a demonstration of this phenomenon in this video - both over the set of real numbers and over a finite field GF(23).
