The story depicted in the film is based on real events and spanned a long 11 years. Once, Sabina Spielrein was an ordinary patient of a psychiatrist—a woman with deep-seated issues that had haunted her since childhood. She suffered abuse as a child, leaving her both terrified of pain and craving it due to her tendencies toward masochism.
Gradually, Sabina transforms from a hysterical, unstable, and socially dangerous individual into a respectable woman of her time. Moreover, she takes on the role of a psychiatrist herself.
Parallel to Sabina's journey unfolds another story—that of a student and his teacher. Carl Gustav Jung learns from the renowned Sigmund Freud. Over time, their relationship evolves, and they become colleagues and friends. However, hints of rivalry increasingly emerge, as the student aspires to surpass the teacher, to become his successor, and to carry on what Freud once began.
