The Church of St.Anthony of Padua is often shortened to Saint Antoine Church, and is the largest Roman Catholic Church in the city of Istanbul. The church was originally built for the thriving Italian community within the city, back in 1725, however the original building, constructed in red brick, was knocked down to make way for a public transportation system. In 1912, the church was rebuilt by Giuliu Mongeri, a renowned architect, and stands to this day as a stunning Neo-gothic and Tuscan-Lombard architectural design.
The church is open daily from 9am until 7pm, and there is a daily mass service too. Prayer times are at 8am from Monday until Saturday and on a Sunday at 10am. You can hear masses in several languages, including English, Polish, Italian, and in Turkish.
Amazing Facts About St.Anthony of Padua Church
- The celebrated Concordia Tiyatrosu (Concordia Theater), also stood on the same site, until it too was demolished in the early 20th century.
- When Pope John XXIII visited Istanbul in 2003, he preached in St. Antoine Church and his statue stands in the inner patio.
- The impressive organ above the entryway was built by Italian firm, Vincenzo Mascioni (Cuvio Varese) in 1949.
- The church is filled with works of art that include a gilded wooden statue of St. Anthony by Luigi Bresciani, as well as two mosaics depicting the Supper at Emmaus and the Baptism of the Lord.
How to get St.Anthony of Padua Church?
If you walk down Istiklal Caddesi (Istiklal Street) away from Taksim Square, keep going until you pass Galatasaray Square. After a minute or two more, you will see Sent Antuan Kilisesi (as it is known locally) on the left hand side.
