A small Brazilian island off Rio de Janeiro has just started a mass vaccination drive as part of an experiment.
Most of the residents of Paqueta Island are expected to be fully inoculated in about two months, everyone over 18 got their first dose on Sunday.
Paqueta was chosen as part of a pioneer study on the effects of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, which is being produced in Rio by Brazil’s leading Fiocruz Institute.
Researchers say the idea is to measure how effective mass vaccination is in stopping the virus from spreading.
