In a significant development, the central government has denied 'special status' to Bihar, referencing a 2012 inter-ministerial group (IMG) report that deemed the state ineligible under existing criteria. This decision comes just a day after BJP allies from Bihar, including JD(U) and Lok Janshakti Party, demanded the status for the economically backward state. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary clarified in a Lok Sabha reply that special category status, previously granted based on specific criteria such as hilly terrain or economic backwardness, does not apply to Bihar according to the 2012 report. JD(U) has indicated openness to a special financial package if full status cannot be granted. The demand for similar status was also voiced by BJD for Odisha and YSR Congress for Andhra Pradesh. The government maintains that the 14th Finance Commission report precludes additional states from receiving special category status, which includes tax relief and increased central funding.
