Part 6 in a 7 part series about Mole Health. Dermatologist Dr Stefanie Williams (MD) explains the steps taken after a skin cancer diagnosis.

"So if you have been diagnosed with a skin cancer, don't panic. The most important thing is that it's caught early. So even if you are really worried about a mole and you are reluctant to see a dermatologist because you are scared of a possible diagnosis of skin cancer, don't delay it. If they're caught early, they're curable in the vast majority of cases.

If you leave it too long and they're caught in more advanced stages, skin cancers can have very serious effects, can have very serious consequences, can have an impact on your life expectancy and can essentially be deadly, but that's only in a very, very, very small percentage of cases.

There are different types of skin cancers, of course. There's not just the most well-known one, the melanoma, which is probably most talked about because it is the deadliest form of skin cancer and it can have a negative consequence on your life expectancy. However, it's actually not the most common type of skin cancer.

It's much more common to have something that's called a Basal Cell Carcinoma or Rodent Ulcer is a different type of name. And that type of skin cancer sounds scary, but in fact once we've taken it out, it won't bother you any more.

It doesn't have the ability to spread into inner organs, into your bloodstream. It just grows locally. It does grow, so it's still important that we do take it out, but that type of skin cancer, for example, it doesn't have any consequence on your general health. So with that removal, that's it and you just have to continue your checkups, but no other treatment needed for many patients, most patients in fact."
