Craco was not spared of tragedies and residents abandoned Craco and left it to decay...
Craco is a mystical place with a very special atmosphere.
Even from a distance you can see the spooky place perched on a mountain.
Craco is probably the most beautiful of all ghost towns.
It's no wonder that a number of movies have been shot here,
such as the James Bond film Quantum of Solace and Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ.
And why was Craco actually abandoned?
The town has a turbulent history. But that wasn't the only thing that made life difficult for the residents here.
In 1656 hundreds of residents died from the plague
And difficult agricultural conditions caused a big change in Craco around 1900:
1300 residents left everything behind- and emigrated to North America.
And landslides and a major earthquake caused the last residents to leave Craco.
Since over 40 years the town is completely abandoned and left to decay.
This lost place is really a special place, the walls are crumbling and nature has taken over Craco. Trees and bushes grow out of the houses.
The atmosphere is peaceful, not spooky, rather melancholy.
