The Gewehr 1898, or Mauser 98, served as the main infantry rifle for the Imperial German Army during world war one. Like most rifles it had a shortened carbine version, but the Kar98az is much more than simply a shortened Gewehr 98. There are quite a few changes made to lighten and compact the action, in order to make the rifle more handy to soldiers in the field. As a result, the Kar98az effectively replaced the Gewehr 98 as the main battle rifle at the end of the war and into the Weimar era.
