The Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) Test is done to confirm the presence or absence of the Hepatitis virus in the blood. HBsAg is also known as Australian Antigen. The test is done to screen patients for Hepatitis B infection.

What is Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B virus is one of the five main hepatitis viruses, referred to as types A, B, C, D and E and is the causative agent of Hepatitis B disease (infection in the liver).

When is the Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) Test done?

- Patients with symptoms suggestive of Hepatitis B Virus infection
- Patients with accidental exposure to Hepatitis B Virus
- Patients with high risk of acquiring the infections such as sex workers, intravenous drug users who share needles, patients undergoing blood transfusions.
- In Pregnant women to prevent the transmission of the disease from infected mother to child.

How is the Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) Test done?

The test is done on a blood sample drawn from the vein in your body, usually the arm. This sample is then sent to the laboratory for processing.

What does the result of the Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) Test mean?

A ‘positive’ or ‘reactive’ test means that the person whose sample was tested is infected with the Hepatitis B virus.

A ‘negative or ‘non-reactive’ test means that the person whose sample was tested is NOT infected with the Hepatitis B virus.

What should be done if the HBsAg test comes positive?

- They should undergo further tests to determine if the Hepatitis B infection is acute or chronic.
- The treatment for acute and chronic infection is different and hence, it is of utmost importance for the patient to determine the level of infection
- Regular monitoring by a specialised physician or doctor is required
