STORYLINE:
More than a thousand people gathered in Moscow to mark the 136th Anniversary of Vladimir Lenin, the revolutionary who masterminded the Bolshevik take-over of power in Russia in 1917 and was the architect and first head of the Soviet state.
Representatives of the Russian Communist Party, together with their leader Gennady Zyuganov laid wreaths and flowers at Lenin''s Mausoleum on Red Square.
People of all ages carrying flowers and portraits of Lenin lined up in front of the Mausoleum to see the embalmed body of the Soviet communist leader.
Gennady Zyuganov described Lenin as a "brilliant politician" and a "prominent statesman".
The mausoleum''s continuing presence in the heart of Moscow has been a source of considerable controversy since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
There have been many calls for the Lenin''s body to be removed and buried, but Communist Party members and others have fiercely resisted the idea.
