Assisted living is for seniors who are having trouble taking care of themselves, or may no longer be safe at home. If you are considering relocating them, one option is assisted living, as opposed to a nursing home or other retirement community. About one million Americans reside in assisted living (#assistedliving) communities, which are designed for seniors – and others – who want an independent lifestyle but who may need help for their individual needs.
These needs include: Daily meals; Dressing; Bathing; Help with Medication; Transportation; and Personal Mobility.
Every person must learn common, everyday tasks to become self-sufficient. As people age or become ill, the body loses dexterity, balance, motor skills and the brain's keen awareness of the body's signals. For this reason, as people age, they need help from other human beings to accomplish these tasks.
Residential care offers people with mild health problems a unique environment to live in, offering residents the comforts of home, as well as a social community to stay active in and medical supervision.
The typical assisted living resident is a senior citizen who suffered a mild decline in their overall health, usually due to an injury, an illness or simply because of aging. They may experience challenges performing daily functions or have mentally declined.
To be honest, “assisted living” isn’t strictly defined, so there’s a great variety in terms of living arrangements and services provided. For example, some but not all assisted living centers have 24/7 nurse staffing.
Assisted living residents may also get help with housekeeping needs such as dishwashing, laundry, and vacuuming. Examples of specialty services that might cost extra are hairdressing, physical therapy, and memory therapy. Most centers facilitate social groups and outings as well as educational activities.
People who are more reliant on help could benefit by moving to a nursing home, where in addition to daily living assistance, they can also receive 24-hour safety monitoring and advanced on-site medical care. You’ll see links to our nursing home videos below in our YouTube description.
Assisted living communities tend to cost much less than nursing home stays. Prices vary based on room size, amenities, geographic location, and care services.
