We can all do our part to end racial injustice in the United States. Whether you’ve been part of the struggle for years or you’re just learning about the reality of police violence, you can help today. Our country has a long history of violently repressing Black people that goes beyond isolated incidents. From systemic police brutality to barbaric prison sentences, the American criminal legal system shows a blatant disregard for Black lives and is uniquely cruel in its treatment of Black children.
If you’re troubled by racial injustice in America like we are, and you want to help to ensure Black people are treated with dignity, humanity, and respect, here are some steps you can take:
1. Support local and national organizations taking on the inequity in the criminal legal system, particularly those led by people who have direct experience with the system.
2. Educate yourself on the mass incarceration of Black people. Reading “Just Mercy” by Bryan Stevenson is a good place to start.
3. Email or call your governor and demand the immediate release of youth sentenced to prison terms of more than 15 years who are no longer a risk to society.
4. Vote in local elections where key decision makers for the criminal legal system are elected. Hold them accountable and organize against prosecutors who continue to sentence children to life without parole.
5. Join the campaign to end life without parole and consider supporting the CFSY’s work to end the practice of condemning children -- and disproportionately Black children -- to die in prison.
The Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth (CFSY) is a nonprofit that leads efforts to ban life without parole and other extreme sentences for children who cause harm; advances alternative responses that focus on their unique characteristics as children, and creates opportunities for formerly incarcerated youth to thrive as adults and lead in their communities.
