STORYLINE:
Ukrainian officials have expanded an exhibit of destroyed and seized Russian missiles, drones, armoured vehicles and other military equipment at one of Kyiv’s most iconic squares.
Massive trucks hauled in giant military vehicles including T-72 and T-90 tanks onto the square next to Saint Michael’s Cathedral on Thursday as officials set up tables to show remnants of reconnaissance drones and laid out ballistic and cruise missiles used by the Russian army to fire upon Ukrainian cities and towns.
On display are remnants of missiles such as the high-speed Kinzhal, the sea-launched Kalibr and air-launched Kh-101 cruise missiles.
The square has long been a venue for Russian gear captured and destroyed in Moscow’s more than 15-month war against Ukraine.
The exhibit, set to formally open on Friday, features Russian communication equipment, various types of weaponry, including samples of ammunition, and different items of Russian military equipment.
Col. Oleksandr Zaruba of Ukraine’s Center for Research of Trophy and Perspective Weaponry and Military Equipment said the “trophies” were neutralised by Ukrainian forces at different times – including during a barrage of missile and drone strikes centering on the capital last month.
It was not immediately possible to confirm such claims, and Russian strikes continue to do severe damage to Ukrainian infrastructure, buildings and – at times – homes and apartment buildings, with deadly or injurious results.
