Glenn Gould reads his favorite novel "Three-Cornered World" by Soseki Natsume.
夏目漱石(Soseki Natsume)is a Japanese novelist (1867-1916) .
He is often considered the greatest writer in modern Japanese history and has had a profound effect on almost all important Japanese writers (ex. Novel laureates, Yasunari Kawabata, Kenzaburo Ooe , a praised writer Haruki Murakami etc.)
The Japanese title of "Three-Cornered World" is 草枕 (Kusamakura). Kusamakura literally means "The Grass Pillow", which is the standard phrase used in Japanese poetry to signify a journey.
Glenn Gould is one of the most celebrated pianists in the world. "Three-Cornered World" was his favorite book for the last years of his life. He read it out for the CBC 15-minute radio show.
Edited captions (Japanese and English) are available for this video. It's because Gould and Soseki's word choice are really intellectual and sometimes it's difficult to understand for non native speakers.
I'm astonished that Gould has sense to find the subtle beauty of the far east country's literature that it's difficult for even the Japanese.
