Nowy Targ (German: Neumarkt, modern administrative name Nowy Targ Square)– one of the three historical market squares of the Old Town in Wrocław,next to the Market Square and Salt Square.
In xii, guests m.in Wallonia, Germans and Jews came to the left-bank Wrocław seeking care from a prince or bishop. From the thirteenth century, the process of location of Wrocław also begins. The Wrocław settlement was established around today's Nowy Targ and already had its own statute, fields and forests in 1214. At the beginning of the thirteenth century, Prince Henry I supported the influx of German settlers, thanks to him the Germans settled in Wrocław with their mayor Godinus had a separate commune and statute[1]. Their presence proves that on the city territory there was a special judiciary according to - Magdeburg law, and the village leaders exercised power there on behalf of the prince.
Later, the square was extended to the west. In the north and south direction there were three streets from the square, two to the west, and one to the east, leading to the New Town. On the square there was once a long building of merchant stalls, demolished at the beginning of the twentieth century and destroyed in 1945 fountain of Neptune, called Gabeljürgen (Jurek with pitchbars). In 1909, trade was moved from Nowy Targ to the nearby Market Hall.
During World War II, a large shelterwas built under the surface of the square, in which there were shops and at the end of the 90s of the twentieth century a music club. In the last weeks of the war, most of the buildings of the square were completely destroyed, only the administrative building (now a branch of the City Hall) and the tenement house at the corner of Jodłowa Street have survived. In the post-war years, there was a market here, where mainly old people were traded. However, the then authorities, by decision of 21 July 1963, moved the traders to Krakowska Street. In the 50s and 60s, residential buildings were erected around the square according to the design of Ryszard Natusiewicz, Włodzimierz Czerechowski and Anna and Jerzy Tarnawski. At the same time, the central street of the northern frontage was built.
In 2013, the reconstruction of the square was completed; in place of the shelter, an underground parking lot was created.
