Enoch Godongwana, the finance minister of South Africa, has changed his mind about allowing ESKOM a three-year partial exemption from publishing its costs in its financial statements.
The initiative had first received approval from the National Treasury in April, but it was revoked this week after facing criticism from the public, especially civil society organisations.
The exception would have allowed ESKOM to exclude major losses from criminal activity and irregular, inefficient, and ineffective expenditures from its yearly financial statements.
Concerns were raised by civil society organisations when severe charges of wrongdoing at Eskom were made public during the country's State capture commission.
Before considering the exemption, according to Godongwana, the corporation needs to take more steps to eliminate corruption and fraudulent activities.
