“August of last year I flew by myself to Cairo. I took an uber out to the Salaam City, a neighborhood on the outskirts of the city and met with Sadat and his friends. Sadat is well known in Egypt for being one of the creators of a genre of music known as Maheraba. It has its roots in the working class
wedding music of Egypt called Shaabi. Shaabi lyrics often remind me of the blues or country western in the states. The lyrics are often about the everyday troubles of losing your job, a girl breaking your heart – stories of the common man. Sadat started as a wedding singer in this world but when the Arab Spring and the overthrow of Mubarak happened, Sadat's music changed to reflect the current state of Egypt. He began to talk about everything from lack of improvement that came from the Muslim brotherhood government to the mistreatment of women in the muslim world. Sadat and his friends took me to two events that night at the first one I witnessed 800 people from the neighborhood dancing and crowd surfing as well as fireworks and an 8 year old boy with an aerosol can and lighter shooting a 10 foot blow torch in the air in the middle of the crowd! Overall it was an exciting night in Cairo and I can't wait to return again.”
