Akaroa is the main town of the Banks Peninsula. It's a small place. The permanent population numbers around 600 people, which can swell to over 7000 at peak times with visitors. It's a beautiful place so it's no wonder that it gets so busy at times. The French landed here many moons ago with a view to claim the south Island as French. Akaroa was known as Port Louis-Philipe; before 1840 and the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. It still retails it's French feel and many of the original buildings..
