(26 Jul 2014) India's foreign minister met with her Nepali counterpart Mahendra Bahadur Pandey and President Ram Baran Yadav in Katmandu on Saturday.
Sushma Swaraj arrived in Nepal on Friday to attend a Joint Commission meeting in the Nepali capital on Saturday where officials are scheduled to discuss Indian involvement in building hydroelectric plants and importing electricity.
Swaraj is co-charing the commission with foreign minister Mahendra Bahadur Pandey.
She also met with President Ram Baran Yadav and is expected to hold meetings with Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and a cross section of the political leadership in Nepal.
India's bilateral trade with Nepal is approximately 4.7 (b) billion US dollars and there are six (m) million Nepalis working in India, according to local media.
India accounts for nearly two-thirds of Nepal's foreign trade and almost half of its foreign direct investments.
India supplies Nepal all of its oil and much of its trade and is a major influence over both the economy and politics in the Himalayan nation.
Swaraj is the highest-level official to visit Nepal since India elected a new government in May.
