Evangeline: Hi everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer and today we are looking at our Yakima-FreshTrack 4 Ski & Snowboard carrier, here on our 2020 Subaru Forester. So this is a great option if you are looking for something to carry your skis and your snowboard safely and securely, it's awesome because this brings them to the roof of your car and not inside your vehicle. A nice bonus is that on the off season, you can use it as a fishing rod holder too. What I like to do actually is to pick up the separate Moki door step, which will allow me to get up there as I mount and dismount my skis, especially since the Forester is a little bit higher off the ground, and I need the extra height to get my skis and snowboards off this carrier.The way this is designed is that it has this nice large push button here that can also be locked. We have it unlocked right now, so even if you're wearing thick gloves, you can just use the palm of your hand to press that button and it springs up and it stays up. It also has these nice rubber blades on the inside as well as a ratcheting mechanism so that when you bring it down, even if you have thin or thick skis and snowboards, it comes all the way down to secure them.
The carrier itself can carry up to four pairs of skis or two snowboards. We have here, one pair of skis and one snowboard. If you need a little bit extra space, this also comes in the Yakima-FreshTrack 6, which has more space for up to six pairs of skis.Let's take a look at some measurements. This might be different depending on the height of your own crossbar but for us from the top of our crossbar to right underneath where the ski will sit, it is at three inches. So that will help you figure out if you have enough space for your bindings.
So when you're ready to take them all off, you just open up the levers like that, you can see how they stay up there, which is nice so that they're not in your way as you take off your snowboards. With the skis and snowboards off, you can see the rubber blades inside more clearly, and you can see how they're quality rubber just to help protect your equipment while they're up there. Now let's take some measurements for the height added to the roof of our Forester here. We'll measure from the top of the crossbars to the top of the carrier. So it's sitting there at five and half inches, and that's the total height added.Now you might have wider or narrower skis and snowboards.
So the actual usable space inside this carrier is 18 and three quarter inches from that end to the other end. The way this mounts to the crossbars, we have it on the wide Inno Aero bar and it clamps around. It's a tool free install it just involves wrapping it around and clamping it down with this knob. This is going to fit around most of your factory round arrow square crossbars. My final thoughts about this carrier is I just really liked how it works as it carries your skis, it carries your snowboards.
It keeps it on the roof of your car instead of inside. You can also get the Yakima-FreshTrack 6 if you want a longer bar space and especially this big button here, I do like that design since you can just slam it with your palm and it stays open.
