Alu-Alu Dance is one of the earliest Melanau’s traditional dance. It describes the solemn mood on mourning day. Alu-Alu Dance is usually performed in the evening by the deceased’s relatives and friends to relieve the family from their sorrow. Usually this dance is performed starting from the first evening of death until the fourth evening. Alu-Alu dance displays skills of the male dancers as they have to balance themselves on bamboos while spinning around in rhythm with songs played. Alu-Alu Dance is based on dreams, daily taks, medicinal rituals and folk games played during Kaul or Sea Spirit- Worship Feast. Therefore, the dance routines are influenced by movements and acitivites in the Melanau people’s daily lives.
