Part 2, with Deborah Hilbert: Transdisciplinary Approaches to Selecting Underutilized Trees
When we plant the same few tree species repeatedly, we create urban forests that are vulnerable to being devastated by invading pests and diseases. Unfortunately, global research shows that highly built-up parts of cities (e.g., streets, parking lots, and developed city cores) contain a small diversity of tree species.
In the second part, we will provide two case studies of how transdisciplinary partnerships between researchers and practitioners can be used to communicate priorities in trees selection and develop lists of underutilized trees for diversification. The second presentation will also include action items that can be implemented by municipalities and working groups to help expand the diversity of trees in their local urban landscapes.
