The Battle of Los Angeles is the name given to an anti-aircraft artillery barrage which took place February 25, 1942 over Los Angeles, California. The incident occurred less than three months after the United States entered World War II as a result of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and one day after the bombardment of Ellwood. Hundreds of thousands of military and civilian witnesses observed an object hover over the city, capable of repelling over 1,400 anti-aircraft shells. The government originally claimed the even was a false alarm, but later changed the story to state the object had been a weather balloon.
