Guide to construction:
It is helpful to have a trombone as a guide and for tuning. The ABS trombone needs to be smaller if it is to be tuned to a conventional instrument.
It is made from one half inch and three quarter inch ABS pipe available at home building stores. The one half inch ABS is for the interior slide only.
You will need a number of T joints and elbows plus one reducer connection that joins the one half to the three quarter inch pipe. The bell that resembles a sink plunger is a funnel from a TSC store. You may wish to cement some joints or secure them with small screws.
One half inch O rings on the ends of the inner slide are important as gaskets to prevent air leaks. I cut grooves for the O rings by making a jig, clamping it to a drill press table, placing a side cutting bit in the drill press, then rotating the tube against the bit. Too shallow a groove and the tube will not fit into the slide. Too deep a groove will result in the end of the pipe being cut off. It is trial and error.
The positions on the ABS instrument may vary because of the three quarter inch bore with some notes difficult to reach. You will need a regular trombone mouthpiece. I used slide grease and water on the slide.
You will be aware that finally, ABS pipe is better for carrying water than for carrying a tune, but it was a bit of fun making the ABS replica.
