Just a quick slide show test of the new Avid Studio video-editing app for iPad — Slide content: The Johnsville Naval Air Development Center (NADC), later renamed the Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC Warminster, PA) occupied the former site of Brewster Aircraft Corporation. The Brewster Aircraft factory manufactured fighter bomber aircraft during World War II. The facilities and airport was acquired by the U.S. Navy and later became a major research and development center during the Cold War era, as well as an important training center for the American space program and NASA, through the early stages of development of the Space Shuttle program.
The NADC / NAWC base at Warminster, PA, was a Naval advanced research and development center laboratory for weapons development, avionics, navigational systems, radar and testing of modern jet aircraft and submarine systems.
The center was also an important U.S. Space Program / NASA training facility for America's Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space programs. The roster of astronauts who trained at NADC / NAWC includes Mercury and Gemini mission astronauts, including John Glenn, and the Apollo astronauts who would later walk on the moon. Johnsville was home to a General Electric DC motor powered centrifuge, the world's largest, used to train pilots and astronauts, by exposing them to the acceleration G-forces they would later encounter during rocket blast off, and re-entry into the earth's atmosphere, or military fighter aircraft maneuvers.
The centrifuge was used extensively for astronaut training during the Mercury missions, using a 1-person gondola. The original gondola was replaced by a 3-person gondola to train the Apollo astronaut crew. The centrifuge and its original round shaped concrete building and control room are now a museum. The rest of the building has been converted into office space and an event / convention center. The original 1-person Mercury gondola was recently returned to Johnsville from the Smithsonian Museum, on the anniversary of astronaut Alan Shepard's historic space flight, with help from The History Channel and Comcast. Alan Shepard was the first American in space.
The ejection seat testing tower, next to the concrete centrifuge building, has been converted into a regional Doppler radar weather tower.
There is a NAWC Crusader fighter aircraft at the Intrepid Air and Space Museum, aircraft carrier, permanently docked in New York City, on the Hudson River. It was moved from NAWC before the NAWC base closure in 1996.
The former aircraft runways of the Johnsville NADC / NAWC base (Naval Air Development Center / Naval Air Warfare Center) in Warminster, PA, have been converted into a Bucks county park.
Nearby Willow Grove Naval Air Station was also on the list of military base closers. Prior to its closure, it was converted into a joint services (Navy / Marines / Army / Air Force / Coast Guard) reserve base during an interim period, until its final closure date. Its Pennsylvania National Guard squadron of A-10 Warthog ground attack fighter aircraft was re-assigned to a base in the western United States. And its large cargo and military transport aircraft and helicopters have also been re-assigned. The Willow Grove Naval Air Station was most recently active during the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
