San Juan, Puerto Rico - January 2, 2020 - Puerto Rico Crime: The secretary of the Department of Public Security (DSP), Pedro Janer, and the police commissioner, Henry Escalera, reported double-digit drops in violent crimes committed against people and property for 2019. The homicide rate for Puerto Rico, based on having a population of 3.1M people, is 19.5 per 100,000. In turn, the United States has a homicide rate of 5.3 per 100,000, based on 2017 data.
The new director of the DSP, Pedro Janer indicated that he wants to implement programs that will greatly decrease crime in Puerto Rico.
