Serbo-Croat refugees reach Bosnia; Sarajevo pessimism
The first bus loads of Serbian refugees evacuated out of territory taken back by the Croat Army reached Serb-held Northern Bosnia on Wednesday (10/4). The United Nations organised the evacuation of the minority Serbs after the Croatian army tore across U.N. ceasefire lines last week and recaptured the rebel enclave of Western Slavonia. Taking only what they could carry, the refugees were given food and medical attention by the Red Cross at Brestovcina two kilometres south of the Gradiska Bridge, before being bussed over the border. The refugees, mainly elderly women and children, were then taken to a centre in Aleksandrovac, 30km north of Banja Luka. U.N. special envoy Yasushi Akashi said he was pleased with the smooth running of the evacuation and added that more buses would be available for those wanting to cross. However, as the tension eased in Western Slavonia, shells continued to fall on the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo. Four people were wounded and one family escaped when a shell landed in their living room, but failed to explode. Walking the streets of Sarajevo continued to be a risky prospect as snipers targetted civilians. One teenage boy
was shot in the leg.
