Synchronized Sleeping. Aliens in the Abyss.
This is one of the most alien and spectacular sights in the Ocean. Allow me to explain.
This is how Sperm Whales sleep. They have the shortest sleep cycle of any mammal on earth. Lasting only 15 minutes. They enter a semi-conscious state where only one half of their brain sleeps at a time. This allows them to maintain basic bodily functions while still getting the rest they need. During this sleep, sperm whales can be seen floating motionless near the water's surface, appearing tranquil amidst the vastness of the sea. It is a remarkable sight, witnessing these colossal creatures drift into a state of rest, their powerful bodies suspended in the deep blue, as they navigate the mysterious realms of their dreams beneath the waves.
This phenomenon was first discovered in 2008, when a team of Biologists were scuba diving and following a pod of sperm whales. Suddenly the large creatures became motionless and began to take a synchronized vertical rest.
Truly one of the most spectacular and magical phenomena on our planet.
