Canadian Television Documentary (2005): Part 1 of 4.
The Canadian Pacific ocean liner "Empress of Ireland" left Quebec bound for Liverpool on May 28th 1914 on what was to be her last voyage. 10 hours into her journey, she sank in the Saint Lawrence River near Rimouski just 14 minutes after a collision with a Norwegian coal carrier "Storstad" with the loss of over 1,000 lives.
The captain of the Empress was Henry Kendall who had achieved previous renown by tipping of the police using his radio that he had as passengers aboard the Canadian Pacific liner "Montrose" the London Cellar Murderer, Dr Crippen, and his secretary / mistress Ethel Le Neve (disguised as a boy) enabling the police to come aboard the "Montrose" with the pilot and make the arrests. This also took place in the Saint Lawrence River near Rimouski near the spot where, four years later, Kendall was destined to lose the Empress.
The documentary focuses on the question of who was to blame for the disaster. The conclusion is drawn that, at least as far as the navigation of the ships is concerned, both Kendall of the Empress and Chief Officer Alfred Toftenes of the "Storstad" told the enquiry the truth and it was the fog that was to blame for the misunderstanding of intentions between the two ships though Kendall does receive some censure for failing to man and later close the watertight doors aboard the Empress.
