9 Understanding etiquette
Before you play with a group for the first time, ask the leader of the group about the etiquette so there are no surprises. [ Ссылка ]

8 Knowing house rules

7 Switching to defense
As a guideline, if you are 4 tiles from being ready to win at the beginning of the last wall, play to win otherwise switch to defense. Link to American Mah Jongg Lesson Strategy [ Ссылка ] (link to PDF provided in the video description).

6 Keeping track of discards
Scout the table for discards and exposures, turn tiles in your hand upside down to indicate those tiles. Link to National Mah Jongg League At the Table - Tile Tells [ Ссылка ].

5 Keeping up with experienced players
The more you play, the faster your decision making - this will take time; while you are building your hand, have your next discard ready so you can move the game along; it’s ok to make mistakes, most of the time you can recover during the pick and discard phase of the game. 4 Identifying hands from exposures
If a player has one exposure, compare it to other exposures in other players’ racks and scout discards. If a player has 2, try to identify the category based on the pattern.

3 Switching hands
If by the middle of the 3rd wall, if the pair tiles you need have been either discarded or in exposures or many of the tiles you need have been either discarded, try to switch hands; if the pick and discard phase of the game is into the 4th wall and you have more than 4 discards, consider switching to defense. Keep exposures to a minimum and continually scout discards and exposures so you can make a timely decision. See the strategy and skill builder links above.

1 Picking a hand
If you were taught to pick a hand when you first look at your dealt tiles, change your mindset! Take a broader viewpoint and pick a category or categories based on the tiles you have. When you run out of discards, then and only then, pick a hand. See strategy and skill builder links above.
