Mr. Sanjay K Chadha gave his views on the SC issuance of Notice on the petition on a petition seeking to put a stop to the practice of political parties either distributing or promising "irrational freebies" to the electorate. Such freebies destroy the level playing field between parties as they act as inducements to vote and place additional pressure on the budgets of cash-strapped state governments should the political party be voted to power.
A three-judge bench, led by CJI NV Ramana, while hearing a plea by BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay to restrain parties from distributing any such freebies ahead of the polls, cited an earlier court ruling to state that these were not a corrupt practice under electoral law.
