In this Spotlight Talk, we feature an indispensable tool in Wharton Esherick’s life -- his cast-iron Washington printing press. Printmaking was a pivotal medium for Esherick, providing him the freedom and experimentation he had not felt as a painter, and a window into working with wood. On this press, which remains on view in the Studio, Esherick printed hundreds of woodcut blocks through the 1920s and 30s. In this 20-minute program, we touch on how Esherick embarked on this medium, introduce you to the press, share blocks and prints from our collection -- and discuss how printmaking continues to inspire our programs.
