In 1972, a new prototype of a small bus appeared in Budapest. Designed to be low-floor, handicap accessible and environmentally friendly, it was the first of what was called the Steyr Daimler Puch City Bus. It was the return of the half-cab bus!!
Production, however, didn't start until 1977, and lasted until 1987. There were three variation, with two main versions. Its most unusual feature was that it looked like a cross between a small bus and a terminal tractor - quite unique!
The final version dropped the terminal tractor design, and had a full-width driver's cab.
The UK also had a version of the bus called the OMNI. Built by City Vehicle Engineering, it was used mainly for welfare services. CVE had many financial problems, and they were never able to meet production goals.
Today, a few City Buses are in preservation, and some have been converted to other uses, such as ice cream trucks and rolling billboards.
