This video is a first sequel to a marathon I recorded back in June, where I compared and reviewed five different (other) high proof tequilas ([ Ссылка ]). The Tapatio in the big, slightly ungainly bottle won that one pretty handily, and it also happened to be the only distillery properly representing Los Altos. In the meantime, however, two other ABV-laden southern highlanders have hit the shelves in Chicago and, due to my overwhelmingly positive impression of this category, I grabbed both of them for a review pretty much the moment I saw them. Stats:
- Tequila Gran Dovejo High Proof Blanco (Feliciano Vivanco y Asociados/NOM 1414, Lot PL3, bottle 568; 49% ABV), 86/100
- Tequila G4 Blanco, 108 Proof (Destileria El Pandillo/NOM 1579; coded 17/08/2020 LEXP0001B54; 54% ABV), 88/100
They are both seriously, seriously good, and worthy siblings to the Tapatio. More broadly, though, and especially after my ho-hum moment with Siete Leguas ([ Ссылка ]), it gives me hope that there are more of these cropping up. It's not exactly an avalanche yet, but 1414 and especially 1579 represent extremely notable pebbles. As I post this, a full four of the top ten distilleries on the Tequila Matchmaker app (Tapatio/La Alteña, Los Abuelos, Cascahuín and now El Pandillo) now have high-proof offerings, typically a blanco, in their product line. This feels like it's beginning to be a Thing, and I could not be happier about that.
