A UN report recently alleged that Erik Prince aided a plot to move U.S.-made attack helicopters, weapons and other military equipment from Jordan to the militia leader fighting for control of Libya.
A team of mercenaries planned to use the aircraft to help Khalifa Haftar.
In April 2019, Prince proposed a private military operation to Haftar, known as ‘Project Opus’, and helped in procuring three aircraft for it. However, Prince’s ties with Haftar date back to at least 2015, when he supplied a private jet for the militia leader.
Following Donald Trump win in the U.S. elections, Prince attempted to set up a Middle Eastern coalition under Trump.
In January 2017, Prince met UAE’s Mohammed bin Zayed in the Seychelles, pitching MBZ on his private military ideas to support Emirati wars in Somalia, Yemen and Libya.
Prince became an unofficial adviser to MBZ, who ramped up the support for Haftar at the onset of the lobbying.
The UAE provided air defenses, drones and jets, while also paying for foreign mercenaries to fight alongside Haftar’s troops. But, the Emirates backed Haftar even before Prince’s involvement.
In 2016, Haftar purchased 11 Mi-24 helicopters, including seven from the UAE. Prince also approached Jordan’s King Abdullah II through Christiaan Durrant for shipment of equipment and mercenaries to depart for Libya. However, the Jordanian military refused to sign off on the licenses.
The UN and FBI continue to investigate into Prince’s links in the Libya war and his involvement in the Jordanian deal.
If the report findings are approved by the UN Sanctions Committee, Prince could face a travel ban and have his bank accounts frozen.
