Floating the Lower Ouachita River from Remmel Dam to Rockport (Malvern) is a great way to get on the water in the dead heat of Summer when all the other float rivers are dry. Remmel Dam is the one that creates Lake Catherine, between Malvern and Hot Springs, AR. Water is released from the Dam nearly every weekend (and often weekdays too), giving paddlers and tubers plenty of water and flow to have an enjoyable float. This 4.5-mile float is an easy, lazy river float with a few shoals to make things fun.
Parts of this stretch of river are more scenic than you might expect. But be prepared for crowds when the other rivers are dry! Everyone has the same idea. And be ready for some revelers. It can turn into a party scene some days. But there's plenty of river to be off on your own.
