The interim government of Bangladesh has lifted the ban on the Jamaat-e-Islami party. Jamaat-e-Islami is the largest Islamic party in the country, which was previously banned by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This is the same party that opposed the creation of Bangladesh as a separate country and collaborated with the Pakistani military during the 1971 liberation war. Sheikh Hasina believed that this party operated like a militant and terrorist organization, with its student wing and other bodies causing unrest in the country. Hasina also claimed that Jamaat-e-Islami was involved in the widespread protests over the quota system in the country. In 2013, due to constitutional violations, the election commission revoked Jamaat-e-Islami's registration, preventing it from participating in elections. The Hasina government had heavily cracked down on the party's leadership. However, after the interim government lifted the ban, the party can now resume its activities and, after registration with the election commission, can also participate in elections.
