Virtua Fighter Direct Analysis | Innovation is the Future! New game time! Virtua Fighter 6 (for lack of an official title) has finally been announced! Praise Sega! I was getting serious vibes from this year that they would announce the game, and I think the timing is pretty much perfect. Up to this point, I think I have been one of the most vocal defenders of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown and the slow and steady approach Sega has taken to making a new entry in the series.

During this Virtua Fighter Direct, Sega did confirm a lot of my theories about Virtua Fighter 6. It is being made on the Yakuza engine and seems to be a close collaboration between the original Virtua Fighter AM2 staff and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (formerly Sega AM4). This is what I speculated would be the result of VF5 Ultimate doing reasonably well, since remaking Virtua Fighter 5 in the Yakuza Engine (or Dragon Engine?) would allow Virtua Fighter to have a new and robust platform for a release -- rather than being thrown together in Unreal or something like that.

As far as what I can gather from the small bit of footage that was shown and the comments from the game's producer, it sounds like the new Virtua Fighter is aiming in the right direction and focusing on fundamentals and staying true to the core of the series while also aiming to innovate it in a meaningful way. That is the vision that is being pitched so far at least and as of right now I really like the direction Sega is taking the game and I hope all the cool improvements added to Virtua Fighter 5 (including the first balance patch in 13 years) will be indicative of the quality of the new game. Let's hope at least because I really need something in fighting games to be excited about these days ha, and VF is my fav series.
