The microbiome—the trillions of skin bacteria, gut bacteria, and other microscopic organisms that inhabit our bodies—has emerged as an exciting area of research in the past few years. Studies suggest it impacts both the development and progression of cancer as well as patient responses to immunotherapy.
In this webinar for patients and caregivers, Gregory Sonnenberg, Ph.D., of Weill Cornell Medicine highlights what we know so far about the human microbiome and how factors such as diet and probiotics influence the health of our gut flora. Microbiome-based treatment strategies are already being explored in the clinic to improve outcomes for cancer patients, and our expert focuses on the biggest challenges and questions that must be addressed.
Dr. Gregory Sonnenberg is an associate professor of microbiology and immunology in medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. He also has primary appointments in the Department of Medicine and Gastroenterology Division, the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, and the Jill Robert’s Institute for Research in IBD at Cornell University. Previously, Dr. Sonnenberg completed his Ph.D. and was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. He has also been a recipient of the NIH Director’s Early Independence Award, the Searle Scholar Award, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Investigator in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease Award, and has appeared on the Forbes list of rising stars transforming Science and Healthcare. He is also a CRI Lloyd J. Old STAR (2019-2024) and CRI CLIP Investigator (2019-2021).
