Boeing Delta II rocket launches NASA's Mars Climate Orbiter. Nine months later, the spacecraft will fail to enter Mars orbit due to Lockheed Martin's ground-based computer software producing output in Imperial pound-force seconds (lbf·s) instead of the SI units of newton-seconds (N·s) specified in the contract between NASA and Lockheed.
As a result of this error, MCO was brought too close to Mars, and it was either destroyed in the atmosphere or re-entered heliocentric space after departing Mars' atmosphere.
