Issyk-kul, A Large Saltwater Lake, Situated In The Northeastern Kyrgyzstan, Covering Roughly 6,236 Square Kilometers In Total Surface Area, It Is The Largest Lake In Kyrgyzstan And Central Asia , And 23rd Largest In The World. By Volume, It Is The World's Second Largest Salt Lake After The Caspian Sea, And Among All Lakes It Ranks 11th Largest By Volume.
Issyk-kul Is Roughly 10 Times As Big As Dead Sea, Or Nearly 2 Times As Big As The Poyang Lake. While Lake Balkash Is Roughly 2.7 Times As Big As Issyk-kul.
Located At An Elevation Of Approximately 1,607 Meters Above Sea Level, Lake Issyk-kul Is The Second Largest Mountain Lake In The World By Surface Area, After Lake Titicaca. The Lake Is 182 Kilometres Long, and Up To 61 Kilometres Wide At Its Widest Point. Although Located At Such An High Altitude, The Lake Never Freezes, Particularly Due To Its Salinity. The Lake Water's Salinity Is Approximately 0.6% Compared To 3.5% Salinity Of Typical Seawater. The Lake Has A Shoreline That Measures Roughly 570-kilometer-long.
Lake Issyk-kul Is Situated In The Issyk-kul Oblast Of Kyrgyzstan, The Second Largest Province Of Kyrgyzstan By Area, The Province Is Actually Named After The Lake Itself. The Lake Is Surrounded On Two Sides By The Tien Shan Mountain Ranges - In The North, It Is Surrounded By The Kungei-alatau Range , And In The South, By The Terskei-alatau. With An Average Depth Of 278 Meters And A Maximum Depth Of 668 Meters. It Is The Seventh Deepest Lake In The World.
About One Hundred Large And Small Rivers Flow Into The Lake Issyk-kul. The Largest Of Them Are The Tüp And The Jyrgalang Rivers. The Lake Is An Endorheic Basin And Has No Outlet, Thus Resulting In High Salinity.
Issyk-kul Lake Basin Is A Densely Populated Region. The Largest City Is Karakol With A Population Of 90,000 Inhabitants, Other Towns Include Balykchy, Kosh-köl, Tamchy, Tüp And Barskoon.
