Following Australia's thrilling 184-run victory over India in the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), captains Pat Cummins and Rohit Sharma addressed the media, reflecting on the match's pivotal moments and their teams' performances.
Pat Cummins' Press Conference:
On the decision to extend Australia's second innings:
Cummins faced criticism for not declaring Australia's second innings earlier. He explained, "I thought the wicket was pretty good. I saw our tail bat reasonably comfortably on it. So I felt like we needed at least 300 on it. It wasn't playing too many tricks. We got 90-odd overs, that gave us 12 overs or 11 overs with the new ball, potentially second new ball today, so I felt like there was enough time."
On the significance of the victory:
Cummins rated the match highly among his career wins, stating, "I'm just trying to work out where it sits ... . Edgbaston was pretty special and ... . When you take all that into account ... ."
On the performance of the bowlers:
He praised his bowling unit, particularly their post-tea efforts, saying, "It was an amazing test match. I reckon that's one of the best to be part of. All week the crowd's been ridiculous, and the cricket's been just as good. Pretty happy at the moment, happy to contribute."
Rohit Sharma's Press Conference:
On Rishabh Pant's batting approach:
Sharma addressed concerns about Pant's aggressive style leading to reckless dismissals: "It's about him understanding and figuring out what is the right way to go about it. In the past, he's given us a lot of success doing what he does. So as a captain there is a kind of mixed reaction to that. It's about (match) situation as well. If there is a risk percentage in ... ."
On the team's batting collapse:
Reflecting on the loss, Sharma commented, "It's pretty disappointing. If you look at the overall test match, we had our opportunities, we had our chances. We just didn't take them."
On Jasprit Bumrah's workload:
Sharma acknowledged the need to manage Bumrah's workload, stating, "Every test match we play, ... . But there comes a time where you ... ."
Both captains now turn their focus to the series decider in Sydney, with Australia leading 2-1 and India aiming to level the series.
