Ever wonder how the world’s top guitar players seem to be able to choose such excellent notes? It’s not due to magic tricks, in fact, it is actually based upon training. There’s something the pros know that the uneducated do not. And, today we’re going to study how to start selecting the best notes in your music. Notes that will work to help showcase just how good you can play the guitar.
To accomplish this, we’re going to leave out a scale tone (or two) helping you discover more interesting ways of creating scale patterns on the neck. This works by way of interval focus. Ever heard the old saying, “Less is more?”
When that “Less is more” strategy is applied to scales we definitely hear the result within the abundant use of 5 tone Pentatonic Scales. Our scale studies today are all about applying simple note removal ideas - just like Pentatonic.
By removing select scale degrees, the 7-tone scale becomes shortened. This causes us to re-think more than just finger-shapes. The geometrical note layouts on the neck change having us consider intervals to the backing chords.
To help develop scales that ‘leave out’ a degree, I’ll be using one of the most popular scales on guitar; “A” Natural Minor. The degree we’re going to leave out is the scales 7th tone of “G.” The lesson examples will help you to develop; fret-hand technique along with a number of other important ideas.
