On October 21st an IAF Mirage 2000 crashed near Madhya Pradesh's Bhind district, luckily there were no casualties as the pilot ejected safely. This has further reduced a potent fighter jet from IAF inventory which is already suffering from the declining strength of its fighter jets squadron. However, there is some reason to rejoice for Air force as it has received a boost to its fighter jet fleet as two-second hand Mirage 2000 fighter aircraft have arrived from France at its Gwalior airbase. As reported by ANI, “The Indian Air Force has received two Mirage 2000 trainer version aircraft from France. The two aircraft were flying with their Air Force and arrived at the Gwalior airbase recently”. These aircrafts would now be upgraded to the latest standards as part of the Mirage upgrade programme going on with HAL. After the last month crash of the Mirage 2000, their numbers in IAF inventory have reduced to 49. The two aircraft were acquired by the Indian Air Force as part of the programme to make up the number of aircraft in the Mirage fighter fleet to 51. The IAF had acquired around 51 Mirages in different batches and they form three squadrons which are all based in the Gwalior Air Force station. The Mirage 2000’s was inducted into the Indian Airforce in 1982, to counter the American made F-16s. IAF purchased around 50 fourth-generation Mirage 2000 C and B fighters’. It signed another contract to upgrade its fleet of 51 Mirage fighters 2000 to Mirage 2000 I/TI standards with Dassault Aviation back in 2011. The plan was to upgrade the Mirages with the latest sensors, electronics and avionics and could give additional service life to these fighters. The work on avionics and systems was done by Thales, while for the missiles, a separate contract was given to MBDA to provide and integrate MICA air-to-air missiles. The contract with Dassault and Thales was for $ 2.4 billion and for the MICA missiles, there was a separate contract worth $ 1.23 billion. The recently received Mirage 2000 will also be upgraded to 2000 I/TI standards. As reported back in September, the Indian Airforce is looking to acquire 24 second-hand Mirage 2000 fighters & IAF has already initiated a contract worth 27 million euros for this. Thirteen of the 24 Mirage 2000 fighters will be operationally intact, which means they will have engines and airframes. Out of these, eight will arrive in fly-by condition. The remaining 11 aircraft will come partially complete, with ejection seats and fuel tanks. These will be scavenged to secure spare parts for two of the IAF’s existing fighter squadrons. This will not only help in the upgrade of existing Mirage fleets but also improve the operational readiness of the fighter jet. The Indian Air Force has invested very smartly in finding the spares for the Mirages in form of phased out old French aircraft and this is going to help the Air Force maintain them till 2035. Mirages have always been the reliable machine of Indian Air Force. They have been the mainstay of the force from the Kargil war. They successfully took out Pakistan Army camps and bunkers on the Tiger Hilltop in the Kargil war and changed the face of the war by successfully hitting enemy camps at such high altitudes with pinpoint precision using laser-guided bombs. Back in 2019 during Balakot airstrikes the Mirages delivered the high accurate and precise SPICE 2000 bombs to Jaish e Mohammed terrorist camp in Pakistan. The Balakot air strike piloted an array of 12 Mirage 2000 fighter jets that crossed the Line of Control (LoC) and destroyed the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror camp in Balakot, Pakistan.
