At a young age, Yimel Alvarado — a trans woman from the state of Guerrero, Mexico — fled violence and discrimination in her hometown and escaped to New York. Almost 20 years later, when she finally went back to her family, she was dead — her ashes returned to a devastated mother and sisters after falling ill with Covid-19 thousands of miles away.
