Have you recently felt a "twinge" in your lower back- only to find a few days later that you now feel "stiffness" or "tightness" in the back of your leg? You're initial reaction might be to stretch it out... but you'll likely find pretty quickly that it doesn't get better... in fact, it may get worse! OR maybe you were running and "pulled" your hamstring?
I see it everyday... people who think they've simply pulled a muscle, until I show them the SLUMP TEST. The slump test places tension on the nerves in your body to help determine whether the pain or stiffness you feel in the back of your leg is just due to muscle soreness or a problem with the nerve. While you're doing the slump test, you may notice that just lifting your head up (as if looking up) changes the pain or stiffness in the back of the leg. Hopefully it's clear to you that the head is in no way directly connected to the back of the leg- by muscles at least. The only thing that connects the two is the nerves in your body...
If looking up in the slump test reduces or takes away the stiffness in the back of your leg, AND/OR it is much more difficult/painful to straighten your leg... then it's likely a nerve is causing your problem NOT your hamstring or calf. "Stretching" it out will likely make it worse... Stay tuned.
